Radios & Rattles – You Sound Funny

My job for the past 15 years has been to speak…and speak well. I was on the phone with my mother a couple weeks ago and she says ‘You sound funny…you ok?’  I was thinking about it and I went back to the studio the next day and listened to some recordings from about a year ago, and some from a day ago and I did sound funny! Granted, I have allergies plaguing me but it was the tone of my voice that was a bit…off.

My voice changed! It was DEEPER!

Of course I panicked, my voice is my career, my livelihood! NOT GOOD RED ALERT! I did some digging and found it’s yet another strange pregnancy symptom. You may not have heard it on the air or noticed, my husband hasn’t heard the changes but then again my ears are probably a bit more sensitive to this type of thing more than others given the job. I have other duties at Star 92.9, like recording commercials, that require me to listen….I mean REALLY listen to audio.

Turns out, due to the changes in hormones, it causes your body to do wacky things including (for some) make your voice a little bit deeper. Adele had this happen when she recorded ‘Skyfall’ for the James Bond movie back in 2012, she went to perform it on stage and asked for forgiveness from the audience trying to hit lower notes she could hit when she was pregnant.

From what I read, it’s temporary. Thank goodness. I have noticed my voice is slightly deeper, this is bizarre for me who sang Alto/Soprano in college and could probably getaway with singing with the men in the Tenor section of the choir by this point if I really wanted to!
